University Policy on Participation in the UI GreenMetric Ranking

Khalel Dosmukhamedov Atyrau University has been consistently participating in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings since 2017. In 2025, the ranking included 1,745 universities from 105 countries worldwide. Among them, Atyrau University ranked 687th globally and 6th among the 30 participating universities from Kazakhstan. This achievement reflects the university’s strategic commitment to systematically implementing sustainable development principles and enhancing transparency through international evaluation mechanisms.

Policy Objective

The objective of this policy is to improve the university’s sustainable development performance indicators, strengthen environmental responsibility and effective governance, and ensure systematic collection, processing, and international reporting of institutional data in accordance with the UI GreenMetric ranking requirements.

Key Areas

1. Infrastructure and Green Campus – modernization of environmentally friendly campus infrastructure and implementation of green practices.
2. Energy and Climate – improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
3. Waste Management – development of waste segregation, reduction, and recycling systems.
4. Water Resources – efficient use and conservation of water resources within the campus.
5. Transportation – support and promotion of environmentally friendly transportation policies.
6. Education and Research – integration of sustainable development topics into academic programs and research activities, as well as raising awareness among students and faculty.

Key Results and Practices

• In 2025, the university organized a seminar dedicated to sustainable development and the UI GreenMetric international ranking. The seminar speaker was Professor Gulbazar Mediyeva, Doctor of Economic Sciences and Academician of the National Engineering Academy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, who shared practical experience and insights on improving universities’ positions in international rankings. At the end of the week-long seminar, 42 participants received certificates. This initiative demonstrated the university’s activities within the Education and Research indicators.

• A seminar titled “Fish Industry Trends and Innovations 2025: Key Insights from the Global Fishery Forum & Seafood Expo Russia” was held. During the event, participants discussed modern technologies in the fisheries sector, principles of sustainable production, aquaculture development, and international best practices. The seminar aimed to strengthen the university’s role in preserving the regional ecosystem, ensuring sustainable use of aquatic biological resources, and integrating research-based solutions into the educational process.

• The university actively participates in regional and international environmental discussions and initiatives, including the 27th General Assembly of the Association of Universities of the Caspian Region, the thematic forum “Caspian Ecosystem: Integrating Science and Education”, and other environmental projects.

The university’s sustainable development activities are not limited to individual events. Throughout the year, various scientific conferences, thematic seminars, student projects, awareness meetings, and regional environmental initiatives are systematically organized.

Monitoring and Reporting

The university regularly collects and analyzes data across the 39 indicators of the UI GreenMetric ranking and annually submits institutional data to the international ranking system. This process is an important component of the university’s sustainable development strategy.

The UI GreenMetric ranking enables the university to improve its environmental sustainability performance through external evaluation and contributes to enhancing the university’s international visibility.
