  • The research project GF AR2390925 contributes to the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 – “Clean Water and Sanitation.

The project focuses on “Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals related to safe access to water, sanitation, and sewerage in Kazakhstan through the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning methods.” It aims to support the achievement of SDG targets 6.1, 6.2, and 6.3.

More than 90% of centralized water supply systems in Kazakhstan’s cities were built during the Soviet period and have significantly deteriorated due to insufficient maintenance. Rapid urban growth also requires the expansion and modernization of water infrastructure to serve new residential areas.

The project aims to develop an integrated tool for assessing and monitoring the sustainability of urban water supply and sewerage systems in the city of Atyrau, as well as decentralized rural water systems across the Atyrau region.

The outcomes of the project will contribute to improving water resource management, strengthening sanitation infrastructure, and supporting sustainable regional development.

  • Comprehensive Assessment of Access to Drinking Water and Sanitation in Rural Settlements of the Atyrau Region (2024–2025)

In 2024–2025, researchers from Atyrau University, in collaboration with international partners, conducted a comprehensive assessment of access to drinking water and sanitation in rural settlements of the Atyrau region. The study analyzed the condition of rural water infrastructure, the availability of sanitation services, and the population’s willingness to pay for individual water supply systems. The work aimed to identify key factors hindering the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), including infrastructural and socio-economic constraints. In addition, academic research on water resource management and WASH issues was carried out, along with surveys and statistical analyses. Policy recommendations were also developed to improve water quality and sanitation services in the region.
