Biography
Born on October 6, 1962, in Guryev (Atyrau), Balykshy district, in a family of teachers. In 1980, graduated from Abai Secondary School in Balykshy district (Guryev) and began his career at a Children and Youth Sports School (DYuSSh). In 1981, enrolled in the Faculty of History of Guryev Pedagogical Institute and later continued his studies at S.M. Kirov Kazakh State University. After completing military service in the Soviet Army (1985–1987), he graduated with distinction in 1989 and was employed as a teacher at Guryev Pedagogical Institute. In 1991, entered postgraduate studies at the Department of General History of Al-Farabi Kazakh State University. In 1992, was appointed as a lecturer at the Faculty of History of Kazakh State University.
In 1995, successfully defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation in Political Science at the Academic Council of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University on the topic “Formation and Development of Political Consciousness in Kazakhstan” (specialty 23.00.02). From 1992 to 2003, worked as a senior lecturer and associate professor at the Faculty of International Relations of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. From 2003 to 2005, served as an associate professor at the Faculty of International Relations of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University.
From 2005 to 2012, worked as associate professor and professor at the Faculty of International Relations of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, including serving as Head of the Department of International Relations (2009–2010).
From 2012 to 2014, served as Head of the Department of International Relations and Professor at Ablai Khan Kazakh University of International Relations and World Languages.
He completed research internships at the University of Rennes (France) at the Center for Political and Administrative Studies (1995–1996; 1999–2000), at MGIMO (Russia, 2000), and at the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Federation (2014).
In 2009, defended his Doctor of Sciences dissertation at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University on the topic “The Development of the Political System of France in the Context of European Integration” (specialty 07.00.15 – International Relations and Foreign Policy).
S. Zh. Sapanov effectively combines scientific and pedagogical work. In training specialists in international relations, he has developed and taught core and specialized courses on the history of Asian and African countries, international relations, China’s energy policy, Kazakhstan–China relations, and international relations in Central Asia. He has authored textbooks and standard curricula, including the State Educational Standard for university programs in International Relations and Asian and African Studies.
He has presented papers at numerous international scientific-practical conferences on foreign policy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, political science, and international relations. His works have been published in France, Canada, Germany, Romania, Ukraine, the Russian Federation, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Kyrgyzstan.
S. Zh. Sapanov has authored 26 scientific monographs and approximately 300 scientific articles, textbooks, and methodological works. Under his supervision, one PhD dissertation in International Relations has been successfully defended.
Since 2018, he has been serving as Director of the H. Tabyldiev Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnology of the Caspian Region at H. Dosmukhamedov Atyrau University.
Research Interests: History of Kazakhstan, regional history, political repression.
