“Medieval Silver Coins Unearthed in Atyrau Region”.
Archaeologists from Khalel Dosmukhamedov University in Atyrau, during excavations at the “Aktobe-Laeti” settlement, discovered rare ancient silver coins, which were studied by Russian numismatics professor Pavel Petrov. He deciphered the minting and gave a high evaluation of the find, reports the Regional Communications Service.
The ancient items belong to the type of coins issued during the reign of Khan Mengu-Timur — the ruler of the Golden Horde, established in the ulus of Jochi.
“According to the well-known numismatist, these coins date back to the second half of the 13th century. On one side of the cast coin are the tamgas (symbols) of Khan Mengu-Timur, and on the other — Chinese characters. This is linked to the capture of a political prisoner named Nomukhan during conflicts between the descendants of Kublai (line of Genghis Khan) and the Ulus of Chagatai,” said archaeologist Amangeldy Mugauuly.
