Wartime Realities of the Atyrau Region Discussed at Round Table
A round table titled “Atyrau Region During the War Years” was held at Kh. Dosmukhamedov Atyrau University in commemoration of the end of World War II and the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory.
The event gathered historians, scholars, faculty members, and students to discuss the historical events that took place in the Atyrau region during the war years, the heroic contributions of local residents, and newly discovered archival materials.
Opening the session, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Leskali Berdigozhin noted: “Kazakhstanis, including the people of Atyrau, made a significant contribution to the Great Victory. To mark the 80th anniversary, a comprehensive 500-page book titled “Atyrau Region During the War Years” was prepared through the joint efforts of Atyrau University historians and the Atyrau Regional Council of Veterans. This work is our tribute to the heroism of Atyrau’s war veterans.
During the round table, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Shakhman Nagimov delivered a presentation titled “Atyrau Residents During the War Years.” Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Zhamiga Tanatarova spoke about the history of Zhylyoi District between 1939 and 1945. Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor Serik Kuanysh presented historical data related to the Atyrau region during wartime, while graduate student Nurzhamal Nauryzova gave a report on national hero Khiuaz Dospanova.
In her closing remarks, Professor Zhamiga Tanatarova shared several research topics with the students: “Kazakh soldiers who were taken prisoner during the war must be studied more thoroughly. After returning home, many were subjected to repression and placed in filtration camps near the borders. These hardships must not be forgotten. Another important topic is the 106th Division, composed entirely of Kazakh soldiers. The personal data of these soldiers remain unidentified to this day. It is crucial to research these issues further and uncover the heroic legacy of our ancestors.”
The event concluded with an exchange of suggestions and reflections, followed by a commemorative group photo.
