“The Book Is The Spiritual Pillar Of The Nation”
A large-scale cultural event titled “The Book is the Spiritual Pillar of the Nation” took place at the “Alley of Distinguished Figures” of Kh. Dosmukhamedov Atyrau University, in celebration of April 23 – National Book Day, which is being officially marked for the first time this year.
In accordance with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s directive during the third session of the National Kurultai to meaningfully observe National Book Day, the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan officially designated April 23 as National Book Day by Resolution No. 522 dated June 29, 2024.
At the opening ceremony, Nurlybek Zhenisbekuly, Head of the Regional Governor’s Office, noted: “A book is a precious treasure and powerful tool that conveys the nation’s values, history, and lessons to future generations. If at least three percent of a society are authors, then that society is considered one that reads and thinks. The growing number of books in the Kazakh language on bookstore shelves today is a testament to the presence of thoughtful, conscious citizens in our country. I sincerely congratulate you all on this wonderful occasion.”
The event aimed to foster a high reading culture in society, encourage widespread interest in reading, and emphasize the spiritual and cultural value of books. The celebration gathered local poets and writers, cultural and art figures, faculty members and students of Atyrau University, library staff, and passionate readers from the Atyrau region.
Chairman of the Board – Rector of Atyrau University, Salamat Idrissov, extended his congratulations: “I sincerely congratulate you on April 23 – National Book Day! This is a special celebration honoring one of humanity’s greatest treasures – books, knowledge, and spirituality. At the National Kurultai in Atyrau last year, the Head of State, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, emphasized: “Reading is the shortest path to becoming an intellectually advanced nation.” He personally initiated the establishment of this commemorative day, and we are now celebrating it for the first time. For me, reading is not just a form of leisure – it is a continuous quest for knowledge and a way to cultivate one’s thinking. I can confidently say that this habit has played a major role in my professional and personal development.”
As part of the celebration, a book launch was held for several works by Doctor of Philology, Professor, Honorary Citizen of Atyrau Region, and poet Kadir Zhusip, including “Ak Zhaiyk Zhyrlary,” “Atyrau Kalamgerleri,” “Parasat Saltanaty,” and “Kui Padishasy.”
Held outdoors in an open-air format, the event featured a fair of literary works from local libraries and the university’s collection, along with literary performances. The Gabdol Slanov Regional Scientific Universal Library presented book installations, exhibitions of new and rare books, photo galleries, and a bookcrossing zone. The Regional Children’s Library delighted guests with fairy tale performances, a parade of characters, a book-themed buffet, and masterclasses. The City Centralized Library System organized exhibitions dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, the “One Country – One Book” campaign, and various quizzes.
Kh. Dosmukhamedov Atyrau University also presented special exhibitions dedicated to the works of Abai, the scientific publications of its faculty, and the “100 New Textbooks” and “Cultural Heritage”programs, including the “Babalar sozi” 100-volume collection.
