Ecology and Society: Towards a “Clean Kazakhstan”
A significant event titled “New Environmental Initiatives and a Clean Environment: Open Dialogue with the Akim” was held at the N. Balgymbayev Center in Atyrau. The meeting was organized to discuss new projects aimed at improving the region’s ecological situation and to establish effective communication with the public.
The event was attended by the Akim of Atyrau Region, Serik Shapkenov, deputy akims, members of the regional maslikhat, university leaders, eco-activists, representatives of youth organizations, young scientists, and school students.
During the event, the Akim visited the exhibition of ecological projects and later listened to specific proposals during the discussion session. The presentations focused on fostering ecological awareness in educational institutions, the role of young scientists in environmental research, and the impact of student projects on the sustainable development of the region.
Speaking about the importance of youth in building ecological awareness in the region, Akim Serik Shapkenov emphasized:
“We have passionate young people. We need to inspire them. I urge our youth to be more mindful and cultured. If we want to be a model for other countries, we must enhance our cultural values and raise our consciousness. We are ready to support youth ecological projects and joint action plans. Success begins with small steps. Even if we start today as individuals, quick results will not come instantly. But I believe that with continuous effort, we can achieve meaningful outcomes. As the saying goes, ‘Many hands make light work.’ I invite everyone to work together!”
Professor Mansiya Yesenamanova, Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Kh. Dosmukhamedov Atyrau University, Candidate of Technical Sciences, presented a report titled “The Impact of Students’ Scientific Research on the Region’s Sustainable Development: The Role of Student Research in Solving Social and Environmental Issues.” In her speech, she introduced two notable student-led projects:
1. Modern technologies for growing plants without soil under climate change conditions
2. “Phytotheri” – transforming plant and food waste into innovative materials
“Phytotheri” is an initiative that processes plant and food waste into environmentally friendly, innovative materials. This project supports the development of zero-waste production and helps reduce the ecological burden on the region. According to Professor Yesenamanova, “This project is particularly relevant for our Atyrau region as it contributes to solving the issue of waste management. The students’ technology for transforming plant and food waste into sustainable, eco-friendly materials not only helps reduce pollution but also creates new job opportunities in the recycling sector.”
At the regional forum, teachers, students, young entrepreneurs, and representatives of NGOs also presented their projects and shared fresh ideas aimed at improving the environment. Proposals included compiling a regional catalog of ecological projects, launching the “EcoSchool” program, establishing ecological clubs in educational institutions, providing tax incentives for green businesses, and organizing an international eco-forum.
